LISTnet kicks off Mentoring Program at CosmoCom
LISTnet President Peter Goldsmith has worked his networking magic again, this time bringing together aspiring entrepreneurs and experienced business professionals.
At the kickoff event of LISTnet’s Mentoring Program, held inside CosmoCom’s lively Melville basement (picture a day at the beach), Goldsmith said, “Mentoring is how Long Island businesses will grow.”
CosmoCom CEO Ari Sonesh, said Long Island does not have enough startups, and cited a link between startups and mentoring. “In Israeli culture, mentoring breeds startups,” Sonesh said. “Long Island has everything, including access to plenty of money, but not enough mentoring. By getting this program going, I think it will help Long Island businesses grow.”
The program pairs mentors with entrepreneurs, who will touch base at least once per month. The mentors will identify goals for startups and suggest ways for the companies to evolve. Peer-to-peer events round out the meetings.
The program is open to all Long Island technology-based companies, although LISTnet membership is required. Approximately one dozen mentors are participating in the program’s initial phase, which covers various parts of a startup’s growth, from angel investing to litigation to staffing.
Because of the sensitive nature of startup intellectual property, the mentors will sign non-disclosure agreements.
Ten simple secrets
Carmine Gallo, a former technology journalist who now coaches executives at America’s largest tech companies on speaking and communications skills, has bundled his findings in a new book.
“Ten Simple Secrets of the World’s Greatest Business Communicators” (Sourcebooks) interviews 25 business leaders and finds out how they command attention when they speak. Among the interviewees are Jeff Taylor, founder of Monster.com, Steve Jobs (Apple), Richard Branson (Virgin) and Scott Adams (of “Dilbert” fame). Gallo even tapped California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The book is a quick read, and while the “secrets” may be old hat to some business professionals, they may be eye-openers for young entrepreneurs – and a great way to polish presentation skills.
Getting prehistoric
Dinosaurs are coming to Long Island for the summer, part of a new exhibit at the Sands Point Preserve in Port Washington.
The metro area’s one and only robotic dinosaur exhibit, dubbed “Battle of the Dinosaurs,” opened last week and will run through Nov. 5. A guided tour takes guests through the display, in which visitors can go face-to-face with giant, robotic beasts.
The tour promises giant pteranodons soaring overhead, meat-eating dinosaurs attacking plant-eating prey and even a comet threatening to end the reign of dinosaurs.
Make your plans in advance: Nassau County officials expect 250,000 people will experience the simulation during its six-month run.
Prize Patrol alert
Publisher’s Clearing House – the Port Washington company known synonymously with Ed McMahon and his Prize Patrol, who shock unknowing winners with millions of sweepstakes dollars – is spreading the wealth locally.
In a three-year, $5 million-plus deal, PCH has selected Uniondale’s ProfitCenter Software Inc. to provide a suite of web-based sales, order management, fulfillment and accounting tools.
Steve Miller, vice president and CIO of PCH, said the company needed one gateway to enter multiple data streams and the PCS web-based solution was the best fit for their needs. Miller added that of 16 off-the-shelf solutions, only the Long Island company’s software made the cut.
PCH required the integrated system not only manage a customer loyalty program and track shipping, but provide “hooks” for third-party collection agencies to access delinquent customer accounts.
