PCS Taps Marrah
Software as a service provider ProfitCenter Software hired former Escalate executive John Marrah as its president/CEO on Aug. 27.
Marrah's challenge will be getting the vast majority of PCS's 40 clients up and running to the SaaS model. Thus far, PCS claims to have about five clients up and running on its SaaS platform. ProfitCenter Software, a division of computer marketer Systemax, was formed in 2002.
In SaaS, an application is provided by a remote host and accessed via a Web browser, thus freeing the user company from the need for on-site servers, installation, maintenance, or support. But there's more to it than that. SaaS providers develop their own software and make it available, through the Internet, to multiple user companies. SaaS applications are new programs or versions developed specifically to be browser-based, making them more responsive and flexible.
Les Johnson, a former Ecometry executive who worked with Marrah, will be overseeing the push to get PCS clients up on the system. Dominique Laborde, formerly chief technology officer with Vertafore, a developer of on demand enterprise software, was hired as PCS' chief operating officer in April.
Marrah's hiring surprised some because for the past eight years, he was president/CEO of Ecometry, a chief rival to PCS. While Marrah says he was happy at Escalate, the move has more to do with SaaS and the technology that PCS has, he says. "I had been wanting to do more software as a service at Escalate. The next six months will be all about getting customers live."
